BAFS conducts “Shrimply Prawnsome Practices: Achieving Food Safety and Ensuring Quality in Shrimp and Prawns Production”

May 24, 2021. Simply awesome! The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS), through the Technical Services Division, conducted a 2-day webinar titled “Shrimply Prawnsome Practices: Achieving Food Safety and Ensuring Quality in Shrimp and Prawns Production” last May 20-21, 2021. This is to promote awareness of the Philippine National Standards (PNS) related to shrimp and prawns by our farmers/fisherfolk.

Speakers from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), and Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation Center (AMTEC) were invited to discuss Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP), end-product standards, and fisheries production machinery standards. The 108 registered participants were representatives from the national government agencies, local government units, academe, private organizations, farmers and farmer cooperatives, students, and housewives.

The 2-day program focused on five (5) Philippine National Standards (PNS):  PNS Code of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) on Hatchery for Freshwater Prawn (PNS/BAFS 281:2019), PNS Code of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) on Hatchery for Shrimp (PNS/BAFS 197:2017), Aquaculture feeder - Specifications and Methods of Test (PNS/BAFS PABES 288:2019 and PNS/BAFS PABES 287:2019), and Quick Frozen Shrimps or Prawns (PNS/BAFPS 70:2008).

At the end of every lecture, participants were able to ask the speakers and give their comments regarding the topics presented. Short quizzes via mentimeter were also given to make the discussion interactive and to refresh the live viewers from the previous topics that were discussed.

This webinar is part of the series of Learning and Development activities showcasing Philippine National Standards (PNS) in the agriculture and fishery sector. Next month, BAFS will tackle PNS on egg and poultry. Check the BAFS Facebook page for the upcoming webinars and join us for another learning session!  ###
