Adhering to standards to build food safety habits

November 2, 2022. Mussels and oysters are two of the commonly available bivalve mollusks in the Philippines. Oysters or talaba are typically consumed raw or blanched. Consumption in raw or undercooked forms may increase the chances of contracting foodborne illnesses, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

To help prevent the occurrence of foodborne illnesses, BAFS created the poster following the Philippine National Standards (PNS) on bivalve mollusks (PNS/BAFS 236:2018 and PNS/BAFS 89:2021) that aims to remind consumers on the significance of the depuration process and the microbial limits that producers should adhere to, and that consumers should be fully aware of.

These posters can be viewed and downloaded through the BAFS website at www.bafs.da.gov.ph. ###
