Ruminants’ Energy Feed Source: Corn Silage

Ruminants’ Energy Feed Source: Corn Silage

September 14, 2022. Ruminants such as carabao, cow, and goat, are usually fed with corn silage to  improve the animal’s health and increase milk production. To identify good quality silages, the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) developed a poster on the Philippine National Standard (PNS) for Corn Silage (PNS/BAFS 143:2015) to guide farmers, and livestock producers.

In 2021, the Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) at Western Visayas State University (WVSU) conducted a training on corn silage making. The agency demonstrated to the different participating farmer cooperatives  its various uses, benefits and advantages as a feed source for ruminants. In a pre-recorded message, Senator Cynthia Villar commended the initiative of the agency to train the farmers in processing corn silage as a feed source for their ruminants towards sustainable local milk production,“Hiling ko sa Philippine Carabao Center na magsagawa pa kayo ng mga ganitong pagsasanay sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng bansa para suportahan natin ang ating mga magsasaka sa pagpapabuti ng kanilang katayuan.”
