Good quality corn, our norm

Good quality corn, our norm

November 10, 2022. Corn is one of the most important staple crops in the Philippines.  It ranks second to rice in the utilization of agricultural resources.  It is used not only for human consumption but also for animal feeds and industrial uses, hence it is a vital crop in the development of livestock and manufacturing industries.

First things first, to have high-quality corn, it is recommended to follow the Philippine National Standards (PNS) Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) for Corn.  This Standard covers primary production and postharvest handling practices aimed at providing safe and high-quality corn to consumers and feed millers/processors.

Although we are used to choosing commodities that look and smell fresh, the PNS for Baby Corn (PNS/BAFS 234:2018) and Sweet Corn (PNS/BAFS 98:2022) provide information on the commodity classification, with Extra Class being the superior quality

These classifications are aligned with the current regulatory and market requirements and are also harmonized with the current ASEAN standards.

Check this out!  The classifications are summarized in our recent posters, available for download on our website at www.bafs.da.gov.ph . # # #
