Global Trend: Cage-free = Stress-free Egg Production

April 19, 2021.  The Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) conducted the final stakeholders’ consultation for the development of Philippine National Standard (PNS) - Code of Practice (COP) for Cage-free Egg Production last April 6, 2021 via Cisco Webex Application. 24 stakeholders participated in the activity who were representatives from government agencies, academe and research institutions, private sectors, civil society organizations, and online bloggers.

The online consultation aims to gather technical and commercial information that can be used as reference for the finalization of the PNS. The activity also aims to further validate the proposed provisions in the draft PNS.

The development of the PNS was proposed by Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) to promote the welfare and improve the health of the layers during the laying cycle. The cage-free egg production is a global trend nowadays. Many food chain companies (i.e. fast food chains) around the world are now shifting from eggs produced in a caged system to the use of cage-free eggs as raw materials and part of their menus. The development of this Standard will provide guidance to small farmers to make their production system low cost and sustainable and their products safe and of high quality.  ###
