On a Sunday Afternoon of January 12, 2020, Taal Volcano started spewing plumes of smoke and ashes. From Alert Level 2, the warning issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) escalated to Alert Level 4 in a matter of 5 hours [1]. As of January 13, 2020, the pyroclastic materials expelled by the volcano reached as far north as Central Luzon [2].

Last August 2018, at least 330,000 sacks of imported milled rice were reported to be infested with bukbok or weevil.The Bureau of Plant Industry - Plant Quarantine Services through the National Food Authority (NFA) said that the rice will be fumigated to combat the pest while assuring the public that it is safe for consumption specifically if washed before cooking. Among the registered fumigants in the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) used for rice are phosphine and methyl bromide.

QUEZON CITY – On January 28 – 30, 2020, the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) held a Workshop on Capacity Self-Assessment and Performance Review as part of its endeavor to identify its strategic direction in the next six years. The three-day workshop was participated by the Bureau’s top officials and select employees. Mr. Peter Dan B. Baon of the Development Academy of the Philippines – Center for Governance (DAP-CfG) led in facilitating the workshop.

QUEZON CITY – On its road to maintaining its ISO 9001:2015 certification, the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) conducted its 9th Management Review (MR) on January 22 – 24, 2020 at the DA-BAFS Conference Room, Diliman, Quezon City. The three-day activity reviewed and evaluated the implementation of BAFS’ Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness. Part of the three-day activity is the review of the Bureau’s Risk Management Plan and Learning and Development Plan.

QUEZON CITY – Second workshop DONE! The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) held the Workshop on SWOT Identification on February 11, 2020 at the DA-BAFS Conference Room, Diliman, Quezon City as part of its on-going activities towards the development of its Strategic Plan. The workshop was facilitated by Director Alvin P. Principe of the Development Academy of the Philippines’ Center for Governance (DAP-CfG).
