BAFS, together with members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on the development of Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Anchovies and Crabs, conducted the nationwide public consultative meetings on the drafts of the PNS for Dried Anchovies, Live Mud or Mangrove Crab and Pasteurized Crab Meat.   The activities aim to present and circulate the draft standards to stakeholders, preferably in the country’s top producing areas, for comments prior to their finalization.

The said draft standards for crabs were recently presented in Mandaue City at Dohera Hotel on October 15, 2014 after their presentation in Iloilo City at Iloilo Midtown Hotel and in Naga City at Villa Caceres Hotel on August 21, 2014 and October 9, 2014, respectively. The draft standard for dried anchovies was also presented in the latter places on August 20 and October 8, respectively.

From the meetings conducted, comments on quality and safety parameters for each product were noted and clarifications were also given to the participants. Major general comment raised from the participants was the issue on the dwindling catch of the said fishery products. TWG members were able to respond that the concerned agencies, e.g. BFAR and SEAFDEC/AQD, have on-going programs on stock assessments and aquaculture-related researches on the issues.

The TWG members who participated during the conduct of this activity are experts from BFAR-NFRDI, DOST-ITDI, SEAFDEC/AQD and UPV-CFOS, with BAFS as secretariat. The Philippine Association of Crab Processors, Inc. (PACPI) is also a member of the TWG. The activity was also in collaboration with the respective Regional Offices of the DA and BFAR. Other schedule of public consultations will be conducted in the cities of Quezon and Zamboanga for the months of October and November 2014.
